Seattle coach Pete Carroll won’t be watching the scoreboard on Sunday during the Seahawks’ game against the Arizona Cardinals. His focus will be on defeating the Cardinals in their final regular season game.

Carroll wants his team’s focus to be on the Cardinals, not what’s going on somewhere else. The Seahawks (8-8) must defeat the Cardinals (4-12) to have any chance of earning a playoff berth.

“There’s a lot heading towards this game of great importance,” Carroll told reporters Friday. “We have a game that we’ve got to play, we’ve got to get focused to do it right.”

Carroll and his team know what the situation is for them. They must win and hope the Green Bay Packers lose to the Chicago Bears. If the Seahawks win and the Packers lose, the Seahawks are in. If the Packers win, the Seahawks will be conducting season-ending exit interviews.

The Seahawks and Packers’ game will start at the same time (1:25 PT). Seattle linebacker Bobby Wagner said it’s human nature for guys to want to sneak a peek at the scoreboard to check on the Packers-Bears game. Carroll wants to discourage anyone on his team from glancing at the scoreboard.

“Everyone wants to talk about looking at the scores. We aren’t even talking about that,” Carroll told reporters. “It means nothing to us.”

Last week at this time, the Seahawks had control of their playoff destiny. Win their final two games and they would have secured a wild card berth. But they suffered a 30-23 Week 17 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers during a game in which the Seahawks were physically punished.

The Seahawks didn’t tackle very well and couldn’t stop the Steelers’ rushing attack. The Steelers, who entered the game averaging 110 yards rushing per game, ran for a season-high 202 yards against the Seahawks. Carroll said the Seahawks missed 15 tackles – including five on one play – during the game.

Can the Seahawks fix their tackling issues?
“I’m counting (on) that we will,” Carroll told reporters. “I’m counting (on) that happening.”
Carroll will find out fairly quickly if he is right in his prediction.
Led by running back James Conner’s 128 yards, the Cardinals ran for 221 yards during their 35-31 upset win over the Philadelphia Eagles last week. If they can’t stop the Cardinals, the Seahawks will probably miss the playoffs for just the fourth time since Carroll became coach in 2010.
“It’s time to finish this thing off on a great note,” Carroll said. “That’s what everything is all about.”
