Unai Emery has played down suggestions that Aston Villa can win the Premier League title after a closely fought 1-0 victory over Arsenal cemented the Villans’ spot in third place – extending their winning run at home to 15 games. Former Gunners boss Emery took over a side sitting 17th in the table and now has the club competing for a Champions League spot.

On the flip side, Arsenal missed out on the chance to regain top spot following Liverpool’s comeback win against Crystal Palace earlier in the day. Mikel Arteta watched from the stands as his predecessor edged out Arsenal at Villa Park.

Speaking post-match, Emery hailed his side for earning a “fantastic” three points. He said: “[I’m] happy. Very happy. [It was a] top match. We started very well with the great atmosphere. We scored the first goal and controlled the game but, progressively, they were imposing.Aston Villa Football Club | The official club website | AVFC

“Our goalkeeper was amazing. We tried to defend and keep possession longer than we did. We defended very well and competed. Fantastic three points. Tough week, after these three points we have to be happy but try to keep balanced.

“The idea was to keep the same idea [as against City]. Maybe it was a bit less than Wednesday but the structure, defensively, was strong. I think we were very clinical with our goal. The Villa boss was also asked about whether his team – sitting two points behind top spot – can launch a title challenge. Their most recent league title came in 1981 but the Spaniard has insisted talk about a Premier League bid remains premature.

“I will speak again in game 32, at the minute we are not contenders,” Emery added. “Of course, we are in [the top four] and we have to try and keep it. We are not being dominated at home.

We try to keep our same idea like we do at home.”
