WANDERERS have secured young guns Luke Matheson and Conor Carty to extended contracts at the Toughsheet Stadium. It has been reported that the brilliant 21-year-olds have signed fresh contracts with the club until 2025.
Wing-back Matheson joined Wanderers on a free transfer after leaving Premier League Wolves in the summer, and he made his first-team debut in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy against Salford City.
He scored his first senior goal for the club in an 8-1 defeat of Manchester United’s Under-21s in the same competition and has made four appearances in total.
Carty signed on loan to Irish Premier League club St Patrick’s in January and was a success, scoring five goals in 36 appearances and assisting the club to win over Bohemians in the FAI Cup final, which was contested in front of almost 40,000 fans at the Aviva Stadium.
Wanderers will be unable to play him until the next international window, which is in January, due to his time in Ireland. However, now that his contract has been secured, the club is looking at additional loan options for the second half of the season to enable him improve his growth.
The former Wolves striker scored on his Bolton debut in the Papa Johns Trophy at the start of last season, securing a draw in the group stages against Tranmere Rovers.
He has previously been on loan with Oldham Athletic and Gateshead, and he has represented the Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level.
Ian Evatt is happy with how both players have progressed through the B Team framework and are now vying for a spot in his senior side.
He believes that with the added stability of a lengthier contract, Matheson and Carty can continue to battle for a spot in his plans.
He said: “They have both impressed since joining the club.
“Conor went out and had a very successful loan in Ireland. Luke has been involved with us and always impressed when he’s played, so it’s great that we can tie them down to longer contracts and look to the future and for them to progress even more.
“This is where we want to get to with the B Team. We want to start developing players that are ready for our first team and those two are the closest really.
“We will probably look to get another loan for Conor to help him keeping improving and increasing his education, probably at a higher level. With Luke, we’ll make a decision on that when we get to January, but I’m pleased for them both and it’s well deserved.”
Wanderers welcome Leyton Orient to the Toughsheet Stadium this weekend and have reduced tickets to £10 for adults and £5 for concessions as part of the second Community Day of the season.
The previous one coincided with the visit of Peterborough United in mid-August and ended 1-1 after Gethin Jones had been sent off in the first half.
