It was an unavoidable situation for a squad that lost its top three scorers from the previous season. Unavoidable for a squad that has added five new transfers and five freshmen.
Missouri’s identity search, like many others, will have its fair share of nasty moments.
The first of these occurred this Friday, in a 70-55 loss to Memphis. After a good first half, Missouri faltered in the second half, losing 44-22 and making only seven of 38 attempts. Memphis went on a 17-2 run in the first few minutes of the half.

When faced with adversity last year, Missouri was typically able to fight back. Kobe Brown, who is now a Los Angeles Clipper, was frequently able to regain control of the game. But few players are as unique as Brown. Missouri will still need to identify a dependable guy or group to rely on when they encounter similar periods of struggle.

However, there is no identity problem. Missouri appears to have the majority of the necessary parts for a successful squad, but has yet to determine where each piece fits. Nick Honor, Noah Carter, and Sean East II form the team’s core group of returning starters. Aside from those three, each player will need some time to determine exactly what their position is. “This is our second game of the season, so you’re trying to get into that rhythm,” heed coach Dennis Gates said. “That’s where I would look at it a little differently than if it were our 10th game or last third of the season.”
With a strong non-conference schedule, the squad hopes to establish itself early in the season.
