As the NHL unveils the finalists for the 2024 league honors, attention turns to the coaches. The league recently disclosed that Rick Bowness of the Winnipeg Jets, Andrew Brunette of the Nashville Predators, and Rick Tocchet of the Vancouver Canucks are the contenders for the Jack Adams Award, recognizing the coach who made the greatest impact on their team’s success. The NHL Broadcasters’ Association, following the regular season, voted for the award. Here’s a closer look at each finalist:

Rick Bowness, Winnipeg Jets:
In Bowness’ inaugural season with the Jets last year, they secured 95 points, securing the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. This season, the 69-year-old guided his team to its second-highest point total in franchise history, tallying a 52-24-6 record for 110 points and claiming the No. 4 spot in the NHL standings. Bowness’ emphasis on defense proved effective, with the team conceding the fewest goals in the NHL at 198 (199 including a shootout loss). The Jets also achieved a franchise-first by winning eight consecutive games in both December-January and April. Despite facing personal challenges, such as his wife’s hospitalization and his own medical procedure in March, Bowness’s influence on the team solidifies his place as a deserving finalist for the Jack Adams Award, marking his first nomination in his 14 seasons as an NHL head coach.

Andrew Brunette, Nashville Predators:
At the outset of the season, the Predators appeared poised to miss the playoffs for a second consecutive year. They made significant roster moves, including buying out Matt Duchene’s contract and trading Ryan Johansen, signaling a shift towards rebuilding.
