FORT VALLEY, Georgia – (41NBC/WMGT) – On Friday morning at Fort Valley State University’s Pettigrew Center, FVSU administration introduced the Wildcats new head football coach, Marlon Watson.

In front of a crowd of Wildcat alumni, players, coaches, and more, Coach Watson spoke about his plans to bring his “Build and Fight” mantra to the Wildcats to continue to be a winning program.

Watson came from Prairie View A&M, where he was a special teams coordinator. Before that, he was at Upper Iowa, Elizabeth City, and even Georgia Military College for one year. Watson told 41NBC’s Justin Dierkes, he is happy to finally take on his first head coaching role because, according to Watson, it’s been a long time coming.

“When you first get into coaching, you dream of being a head coach” said the new Wildcats head coach Friday. “All the steps that I have taken, and all the people that have helped me out, I haven’t done this by myself, this moment means the world to me.”

Watson also spoke on why he chose to come to the Valley. “Georgia has always felt like home to me” said Watson. “Then, to get the opportunity to come back to Georgia, it’s almost a Godsend. You talk about people at Fort Valley, and the HBCU culture of things like that, it’s a no-brainer. It is a no-brainer that, I would say I chose, but they chose me, but just that partnership going back and forth with myself, and then the university.”

Coach Watson also gave his initial reaction to the team he will be leading this upcoming season. “There’s a humble swag to them” said Watson. “They know they can play, but they’re naive enough to think that they know everything. They learn very quickly. So, that type of team, you can win with.”

Watson will replace former Wildcats head coach Shawn Gibbs, who had a record of 22-9 in his three seasons with FVSU. Gibbs went back to North Carolina A&T State University to accept the head coaching position there.
