Gerwyn Price’s wife was left trembling and tearful following her husband’s monumental victory over Joe Cullen in the World Darts Championship. Price beat Cullen 4-3 in a thrilling third-round match at Alexandra Palace and even made a light-hearted gag about Cullen being “disrespected” by the media earlier in the tournament.

 

With three sets and five legs each, one-time darts world champion Price kept his cool under pressure to clear 45 and win the sudden death leg. This prompted the classic ‘Gezzy’ battle cry of “Come on!” along with an expression of genuine relief.

The cameras then panned to wife Bethan Palmer, who was visibly emotional as she looked towards the stage, her hands shaking as she covered her eyes. Price then embraced Cullen in the wake of his nail-biting win, with the pair exchanging words after their intense showdown.

Price, 39, took the opportunity to engage in some friendly banter with his opponent after the result. Speaking to Sky Sports (via Wales Online), Price referred to Cullen’s recent discomfort with the media.

 

“I can play a lot better than I played tonight, so can Joe,” said ‘The Iceman’. “No disrespect to him… nobody wants to disrespect Joe Cullen these days.”

 

“I certainly learned that the hard way,” chimed in Sky Sports presenter Abigail Davies, who was one media member who appeared to get the cold shoulder from Cullen. Despite not being obligated to speak to Sky Sports post-match, ‘The RockStar’ opted not to answer questions following his defeat and promptly exited the building after the game.

Cullen, 35, faced backlash for his terse responses during an on-stage interview with Welsh reporter Davies after defeating Wessel Nijman. However, he sought to underline he and the reporter had a great rapport following the controversy.

 

“Last thing I’ll say just to clarify this… myself and Abi get on brilliant,” he wrote on social media. “I briefed Abi before the interview started that I wouldn’t be giving her much… and she replied, ‘No problem sugar t**s!’ [in tribute to Gavin and Stacey character Nessa] – just to draw a line under that. Enjoy Xmas guys.”

 

In a later press conference, Cullen abruptly left after lambasting the media for their pre-match predictions: “I’ve struggled this year on the oche and off the oche so to find a performance like that. To be honest I’ve got you guys to thank because I don’t think I would have played like that if I hadn’t read some of the nonsense that I read beforehand.
