The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have traded cornerback Carlton Davis to the Detroit Lions for a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Lions also will receive sixth-round picks in the 2024 and 2025 drafts.

On Monday, Detroit addressed what was seen as its biggest need on defense by obtaining the former Auburn defensive back. Only five NFL teams yielded more passing yards and more passing touchdowns than the Lions in 2023, even though Detroit won the NFC North and advanced to the conference-championship game.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. announced Tuesday that he was “stepping away from the team to take care of personal family matters.”

Shortly after the 33-year-old shared the news on social media, the Lions said they had released him. Neither Jones nor the team provided details on what led to his departure.

“Although this was no easy decision, I cannot be the person/player that I need to be for this team as well as tend to my family from afar,” Jones wrote. He credited the Lions for showing an “amazing” amount of “love and support for myself and my family over the years.

Davis had played his six NFL seasons with the Buccaneers after joining Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He started all but one of the 84 games that he played for the Bucs, including Super Bowl LV, where Tampa Bay defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 on Feb. 7, 2021.

In the 2023 season, Davis played in 12 games and recorded 52 tackles, two interceptions and nine passes defended.

In his NFL career, Davis had 324 tackles, nine interceptions and 73 passes defended in regular-season play.

Dvis is entering the final season of a three-year $44.5 million contract that kept him out of free agency after the 2021 season. Davis has a base salary of $14 million in 2024.
