φThe 2024–25 Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement may have had a far stronger start to the season if he had had his way with a number of transfer targets.

Despite acquiring 11 players during the summer transfer window, Rangers are deficient in many areas, particularly in the attacking sector at Ibrox. Clement-Rangers Albion Rrahmani was poised to transfer, but ultimately signed with Sparta Prague, where he propelled the team into the Champions League group stages shortly after his arrival.

Though the Belgian isn’t the first Rangers manager to miss out on important targets during a transfer window—it has happened frequently since the Light Blues returned to the Premiership in 2016—not acquiring a center-forward of this calibre could come back to haunt Clement, especially in light of Danilo’s recent injury woes.

Gerrard’s achievement with Rangers in the transfer market

Even if it took the Liverpudlian two seasons to become used to Glasgow and assemble a team capable of winning major titles, the Englishman was laying the foundation from his very first summer window. 2018 saw the arrival of players like Ryan Kent and Connor Goldson, who both made significant contributions to the team between 2018 and 2023. Gerrard also knows when to pass on a deal. Thanks to cross-border transfer regulations, Joe Aribo arrived at the club prior to his second season as manager for a mere £300k. The club sold him to Southampton for £6 million after three years. A similar situation developed in relation to Calvin Bassey, the defender. Similar to Aribo’s transfer, the youthful left-back arrived in Scotland from Leicester City. In his second season, he finally made his way into the starting lineup, helping the squad win the Scottish Cup and get to the Europa League final.

Ibrox Premiership, Beckett Transfer, Gossip, and Panzo A few weeks later, Ajax made the incredible decision to sign him for a price little around £20 million.

There is no denying that Gerrard made a few terrible transfers. Juninho Bacuna, who joined after winning the Premiership title in the summer of 2021, is one name that sticks out.
