Dundee announced on Thursday (18 January) that Astley has penned a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Scottish Premiership side. Astley, who joined Everton at the age of seven, posted a message on Instagram [18 January] thanking everyone at the club for their support. Former Everton winger Bolasie, now at Swansea City, replied to the post with: “All the best bro.” Astley departs Goodison Park having never made a senior appearance for Everton, despite his long-Three clubs 'agree' to 'sue Everton for £300m' over FFP breach as Carragher slams 'excessive' ruling

time association with the club. Now aged 22, it is quite clear that the Wales under-21 international was never going to make the grade and so a move away makes perfect sense. Astley was just 16 when he made his debut for the Under-23s, suggesting he would be in the first team in no time. It did not quite work out that way, but he does at least have some experience of senior football thanks to a loan spell with Accrington Stanley.

That period away from Goodison last season may well have seen him catch the eye of Dundee, who seem like a good club for Astley to join.

Saying goodbye to a team after so long there could not have been easy, but Astley now has a chance to spread his wings elsewhere and make a name for himself.
