Rutgers Basketball Player Dylan Harper Abruptly Depart From Team Roster Due To…
Basketball didn’t stop with his father. Dylan’s mother, Maria Pizarro, played at the University of New Orleans and is now an assistant coach at Don Bosco Prep, the very high school Dylan attended.
Maria’s Filipino heritage also adds an international dimension to the dynasty, as her father represented the Philippines in jai alai at the 1968 Summer Olympics.
Brother Ron Harper Jr. continued the family tradition at Rutgers from 2018 to 2022 before signing a two-way NBA-G League contract with the Detroit Pistons.
Dylan grew up watching Ron Jr. hone his craft, admitting he learned some of his competitiveness and discipline by following his brother’s example: “Growing up, [Ron] never let me win anything… You are fighting for your life every day…”
From five-star recruit to collegiate star
Dylan carried his high school success at Don Bosco Prep to Rutgers, where he was a consensus five-star recruit-the highest-ranked player in the program’s history.
He chose to stay close to home, crediting family and a supportive coaching staff for his decision: “I like to go family over everything… They tell you they’re always gonna do right by you no matter what.”
His freshman season confirmed his promise. Harper averaged 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game, shooting nearly 48% from the field. He earned Third-Team All-Big Ten honors and a place on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.
