Former Patriots QB suspended for PEDs says he ‘messed up’ exemption

Jimmy Garoppolo’s suspension was more about the quarterback screwing up paperwork than it was about PEDs.

This week, the former New England Patriots quarterback was introduced as the new backup for the Los Angeles Rams. The signing came a month after news broke that he’d be suspended for the first two games of the 2024 NFL season for violating the league’s Performance Enhancing Drugs policy.

The 32-year-old Garoppolo reportedly violated the policy by using a prescribed medication and did not have a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). The quarterback was up front about the violation, admitting that he “messed up” the exemption for his prescription.

“I mean, just messed up the TUE, really,” he said Tuesday. “I hate to joke about it, but I just messed up the TUE when I first got to Las Vegas and yeah, bad timing, I guess.”

After signing with the Rams this offseason, Garoppolo is now with his third team in three seasons. After a six-year run with the San Francisco 49ers, Garoppolo landed with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023. However, after a combination of injuries and onfield struggles, he was benched before being released.

Now, he’s in an unfamiliar position. He’s been a backup before, having sat behind Tom Brady in his first few seasons in New England. But this is the first time he’s dealt with a suspension.
