One of the biggest questions surrounding WVU football this offseason is who will take the first snap under center when the Mountaineers kick off the 2025 season against Robert Morris on Aug. 31.

New head coach Rich Rodriguez insisted in the spring that the quarterback battle is wide-open for anyone to win the job. With a number of intriguing options on the roster, it is a position battle that could ultimately be decided by the slimmest of margins.

With Big 12 Football Media Days coming up next month, Gold and Blue Nation will catch you up to speed on the Mountaineers over the next two weeks with our annual roster preview series.

We will start with the most important position on a football team, quarterback.

Nicco Marchiol – Now a redshirt junior, Marchiol is the Mountaineers’ only returner with previous playing experience. The primary backup to Garrett Greene for the last two seasons, Marchiol showed a great ability to perform when the team needed him. Across three spot starts and two prolonged relief appearances, Marchiol led the Mountaineers to a 4-1 record, defeating Oklahoma State, Pitt, Texas Tech and Cincinnati. In total, the left-hander has thrown for 742 yards and scored 11 total touchdowns.

Khalil Wilkins – A three-star recruit in 2023, Wilkins will continue to develop as a dual-threat quarterback in his redshirt freshman season. The Washington, D.C., native racked up 1,430 total yards and 19 total touchdowns during his senior season in high school.

Scott Kean – A redshirt junior who walked on in 2022.

Newcomers

Jaylen Henderson (Texas A&M) – The first quarterback Rodriguez brought to WVU, Henderson is looking to revive his career after sitting out with an injury last season. Prior to the injury, Henderson started the final four games for the Aggies in 2023. Another left-hander, he threw for 715 yards and six touchdowns while rushing in two more scores. He had led Texas A&M to a 2-1 record as a starter before being injured early in their bowl game against Oklahoma State.

Max Brown (Charlotte) – Brown transferred to Charlotte from Florida before last season and appeared in five games with the 49ers. The redshirt junior threw for 561 yards and three touchdowns but was also picked off six times.

Scotty Fox Jr. – An incoming four-star freshman recruit from Mentar High School in Mentar, Ohio. Fox had 3,076 total yards of offense and 41 total touchdowns during his senior season.

Notable Departures
