Breaking: 31-year-old Ottawa Redblacks running back announces CFL retirement
American running back William Stanback has announced his retirement after seven seasons in the CFL. The 31-year-old spent 2025 with the Ottawa Redblacks, rushing for 698 yards and four touchdowns on 147 carries while adding 36 catches for 278 yards and a score over 17 games.
Stanback spent the first five seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, briefly joining the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020. Across 97 CFL games, he amassed 5,589 rushing yards, 1,749 receiving yards, and 25 total touchdowns. Twice an All-CFL selection, he also led the league in rushing in 2021 and won a Grey Cup in 2023.

Reflecting on his career, Stanback shared on social media that football taught him resilience and shaped his character, thanking coaches, teammates, organizations, fans, and his late parents for their support.
