Done Deal: Saskatchewan Roughriders have officially signed the top defensive player in Canadian university football (U SPORTS) with 41.5 total tackles
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have officially signed Canadian linebacker Seth Hundeby.
Standing 6′3″ and weighing 245 pounds, Hundeby recently claimed the Presidents’ Trophy, awarded annually to the top defensive player in U Sports football. Previous recipients include Nelson Lokombo, Adam Auclair, and Henoc Muamba. In the 2025 season with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, Hundeby tallied 58 defensive tackles, six tackles for loss, six sacks, four forced fumbles, and two interceptions, earning his second first-team U Sports All-Canadian honor.

A Saskatoon native, Hundeby impressed at the CFL Combine with a 4.70-second forty-yard dash and a 6.88-second three-cone drill, earning recognition as one of J.C. Abbott’s list of risers. Although he was drafted in the fourth round of the 2025 CFL Draft, analysts suggested he might have been selected earlier had he not planned to return to school.
Over 53 collegiate games, Hundeby accumulated 229 total tackles, 27.5 tackles for loss, 18 sacks, seven pass knockdowns, six forced fumbles, and two interceptions—highlighting his consistent impact on the field.
The Roughriders themselves enjoyed a successful 2025 campaign, finishing first in the West Division with a 12-6 record, their top spot since 2019. They capped the season with a victory over the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg, securing their first championship in 12 years. Quarterback Trevor Harris started 11-5, passing for 4,549 yards with 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Saskatchewan also excelled statistically, ranking second in net offence, second in net defence, and tied for third in turnover differential (+8). The team’s standout performers included A.J. Ouellette (leading rusher, 1,222 yards), KeeSean Johnson (leading receiver, 1,159 yards), and A.J. Allen (leading tackler, 91 tackles). The Roughriders drew strong fan support, averaging 28,427 spectators per game, a 2.7% increase from the previous season.
