Roughriders sign Texas linebacker David Gbenda

Saskatchewan Roughriders have added to their defense with the signing of David Gbenda.

The six-foot, 235-pound linebacker enjoyed a strong collegiate career at the University of Texas, featuring in 62 games and recording 166 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, two interceptions, four pass breakups, and a forced fumble.

Gbenda, a native of Katy, Texas, briefly joined the Tennessee Titans after going undrafted in 2025, but was released at the end of training camp. He also posted solid athletic numbers at his pro day, highlighting his all-around ability.

The move comes as Saskatchewan look to reinforce their squad after a busy offseason that saw several key departures, including Jake Maier, Tommy Nield, and Malik Carney. Veteran Micah Johnson has also stepped away from playing to take up a coaching role.

Despite those changes, the Roughriders remain a team to watch after a dominant 2025 season, finishing top of the West Division with a 12-6 record before going on to defeat the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Grey Cup.

With the 2026 campaign approaching—including the CFL Draft and upcoming training camps—this latest signing signals Saskatchewan’s intent to stay competitive and build on their championship success.
