Says Sam Lammers about Manchester United’s goal as the former Rangers player quiets Old Trafford
Lammers continued his impressive post Rangers form with a Europa League strike in Manchester
Sam Lammers’ spell at Rangers was frustrating for all involved. Especially after he returned to the Netherlands and started banging in goals.
Well, as if that wasn’t bad enough the 27-year-old heaped the irony on for Gers fans as he showed the killer instincts he was missing at Ibrox by burying an equaliser against Manchester United to gain a precious Europa League point for his new side FC Twente.
Erik ten Hag’s team took a first-half lead and continued to dominate but couldn’t increase the deficit. Goal hero Christian Eriksen then turned to villain by gifting possession to Lammers who showed all the composure in the world to finish past Andre Onana.
Lammers insists his side could have even WON the game but admitted it was still a special moment for him and the team.
“We could have won. Last 10 minutes, it was a little bit tricky, we had to stay back and defend the goal. There were definitely chances to take the three points, but we are very pleased with one point.
“We want to play with confidence but we know they’re a strong team. So sometimes we have to drop back and wait for the counter-attack. That’s how we scored, waiting for the mistake. We had two or three other moments where we could have scored. But very pleased.p
“There’s not very many places better to score away from home than Old Trafford. We’re going to celebrate now in the dressing room. It’s amazing. We’re going to enjoy this moment, it’s a special night for us.”
The pundit praises Philippe Clement for his treatment of the Rangers star against Dundee.
Craig Moore has lauded Philippe Clement for his decision to substitute James Tavernier late on in the clash between Rangers and Dundee.
The Light Blues ran out 3-0 winners on Saturday (21 September) as they booked their place in the League Cup semi-finals thanks to a brace from Cyriel Dessers and a second-half penalty from the skipper.
Tavernier was replaced by Neraysho Kasanwirjo with just under 10 minutes to play in Glasgow before being given a standing ovation by the home crowd and Go Radio pundit Moore thinks it could re-energise the 32-year-old.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (23 September, 18:00) he said: “I actually think it was a good move from the manager.
“I think there have been a lot of tough times that Tavernier has experienced as a captain and therefore he’s a player who takes the brunt of a lot of things.
“But it was a good performance, he got his penalty so he scored again and there was a moment there where the fans could show their appreciation towards him which I’m sure will give him some energy and a really good feeling.”
Will James Tavernier exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer links?
Few Rangers players in recent memory have had to deal with more criticism than Tavernier, with the skipper tending to be the target of most fans’ frustration whenever the Light Blues drop points.
As the captain, there is an expectation that the right-back should lead from the front and set the standard and while he failed to do that in the Old Firm derby this season, he flexed his creative muscles against Dundee at Ibrox.
Whether or not the reception from the fans inside the stadium will be enough to re-energise the Englishman as Moore has suggested, only time will tell but it would have surely been a welcome boost after a difficult few months.
Hopefully, Tavernier will pick up from where he left off in the Europa League clash with Malmo. The Gers will need their skipper to perform if they want to start their European campaign with a win.
