Uncertainty hits Pittsburgh as Kyle Dubas drops cryptic comment on Evgeni Malkin’s future

For the first time in years, the Pittsburgh Penguins are in a position to be buyers ahead of the trade deadline. Sitting second in the Metropolitan Division, firmly in a playoff spot, and riding positive momentum, the conversation around the team hasn’t centered on potential acquisitions—it’s focused on Evgeni Malkin’s future.

According to Josh Yohe, general manager Kyle Dubas recently addressed Malkin’s situation, describing him as a “franchise icon,” praising his “spectacular season,” and emphasizing that he deserves full respect. The veteran forward has 47 points in 45 games this season and is entering the final year of his contract, with his 40th birthday approaching in July.

While the Penguins are reportedly aiming to add younger talent, salary cap space isn’t a constraint—they have approximately $48 million available next season. Instead, the key factor seems to be the team’s direction.

Malkin’s agent met with Dubas’ camp last week, and it’s believed the forward and GM had another in-person discussion within the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, Malkin has expressed a desire to remain in Pittsburgh, and captain Sidney Crosby is also hoping his longtime teammate stays, particularly with Crosby himself under contract through the 2026–27 season.

For a team in playoff contention, the timing of these discussions is delicate. When a GM labels a matter as “private,” it rarely indicates something simple. In Pittsburgh, that ambiguity alone is enough to keep fans and insiders on edge.
