Behind the Scenes: Life of a CFL Player During the Season
The Canadian Football League (CFL) isn’t just about the action on the field—it’s about the grind, the preparation, and the dedication that fans rarely see. To truly understand what it takes to be a CFL player, we took a closer look at the daily lives of some of the league’s top stars: Bo Levi Mitchell, Andrew Harris, and Simoni Lawrence.

Early Mornings and Rigorous Training
For CFL players, the day often begins before sunrise. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, known for his pinpoint accuracy and leadership in the Calgary Stampeders’ offense, starts his mornings with film study. “I watch hours of footage, not just my own plays but my opponents’ tendencies,” Mitchell explains. Physical training follows, with a mix of strength, agility, and cardio sessions to stay in peak condition.
Running back Andrew Harris, the league’s all-time rushing leader, emphasizes nutrition as part of his routine. “What you eat is as important as how hard you train,” he says. Harris’s days are filled with weightlifting, position drills, and careful meal planning to maintain his explosive performance on the field.
Strategy and Teamwork
Beyond physical preparation, the CFL demands intense mental focus. Linebacker Simoni Lawrence spends hours breaking down offensive schemes. “Film sessions can be grueling, but they’re what separate a good player from a great one,” Lawrence shares. The teamwork extends off the field too, with players building chemistry during practice, team meetings, and travel.
Travel, Recovery, and Fan Interaction
The CFL schedule is tough, with players often traveling across provinces for games. Recovery becomes essential: ice baths, physiotherapy, and sleep are non-negotiable. But CFL players also make time for fans. “Whether it’s signing autographs after a game or engaging on social media, fans are the reason we do what we do,” says Mitchell.
The Hidden Sacrifices
Behind the glamour of game-day highlights are countless sacrifices. Long hours, injuries, and time away from family are all part of the job. Yet, the passion for the game drives players forward. Harris sums it up: “It’s not easy, but when you step onto the field and hear the fans, everything is worth it.”
Final Thoughts
Life as a CFL player is a mix of hard work, strategy, and dedication. From early mornings to late-night recovery, from film study to fan interactions, the grind is real. For Mitchell, Harris, and Lawrence, it’s more than a sport—it’s a lifestyle, one that few truly understand but many deeply admire.
