Breaking news: National Hockey League introduces major rule change for World Cup, outshining Olympics
A section of the hockey world voiced frustration following the men’s tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympics—not because of a lack of quality, but due to the format used by the International Ice Hockey Federation.
The gold medal clash between Canada and United States was decided under a 3-on-3 overtime system, with the possibility of a shootout if no winner emerged. While practical for scheduling, many felt that such a format diminished the significance of what should be a truly epic final.

That’s why the latest update from the National Hockey League has been widely welcomed.
The league confirmed that the 2028 World Cup of Hockey—set to take place across Calgary, Edmonton, and Prague—will not follow the same approach. Instead of adopting IIHF rules, the tournament will use the NHL’s playoff-style format for its biggest games.
This means no 3-on-3 overtime and no shootouts in decisive moments. If games remain tied, they will be settled through traditional 5-on-5 sudden-death overtime—the same format that has delivered some of the most iconic moments in hockey history.
For many fans, it’s a move that restores the drama and integrity expected on the sport’s biggest stage.
