The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have been in talks with former NFL running back James Robinson, who was recently placed back on the team’s negotiation list on March 19. According to football operations president Orlondo Steinauer, discussions have taken place, though nothing concrete has developed yet.

“If things had gone exactly how we hoped, he’d already be signed,” Steinauer admitted.

Head coach Scott Milanovich, however, confirmed he hasn’t personally spoken with Robinson. While he recognizes Robinson’s talent from watching his film, his main focus remains on the current roster as the team evaluates how a potential addition might fit.

Robinson, standing at 5-foot-9 and weighing 219 pounds, went undrafted in 2020 but quickly made an impact with the Jacksonville Jaguars. As a rookie, he rushed for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns on 240 carries, while also contributing 49 receptions for 344 yards and three scores. Over four NFL seasons, he earned roughly $6.1 million.

Steinauer emphasized that the team remains open to all options at running back, noting they already have several players they like and had previously targeted. He added that Robinson could further strengthen competition within the squad.

With East Division all-star Greg Bell now in Ottawa, the starting running back role is up for grabs. Shane Watts, who spent time on the practice roster last season, could have an early advantage due to his familiarity with the system. Meanwhile, Larry Rountree III and Avery Morrow are also expected to compete for the spot.

Milanovich acknowledged that while the team has some familiarity with its current running backs, none have significant CFL game experience. As a result, the position will be decided through open competition.

He also hinted that training camp may include more full-contact sessions to better evaluate the players, especially given the limited number of preseason games.

At 53, Milanovich is determined to find creative ways to properly assess the running backs and identify the best option to lead the Tiger-Cats’ backfield.
