Breaking news: New favourite emerges in race for Toronto Maple Leafs general manager job
The search for a new GM at Toronto Maple Leafs is heating up—and a fascinating name has emerged as a leading candidate.
According to insider Elliotte Friedman, Hayley Wickenheiser is gaining serious attention within the organization following the departure of Brad Treliving.

Wickenheiser, currently serving as an assistant GM, brings an exceptional résumé—both as a decorated Olympic champion and as a professional off the ice. Her growing influence within the club, combined with strong backing from CEO Keith Pelley, has placed her firmly in the spotlight.

Friedman revealed that Pelley “thinks very highly” of Wickenheiser and has already held internal discussions with her, suggesting she could have a significant advantage in the race.
However, nothing is confirmed just yet.
“I don’t know that she’s going to be the next person in charge… but I wouldn’t be surprised if it appeals to her,” Friedman noted.
The Maple Leafs are also believed to be considering a structural shift, potentially separating the general manager role from a President of Hockey Operations position moving forward. If that happens, the organization may appoint a president first before finalising their GM choice.
While the process is still unfolding, one thing is clear—Wickenheiser is a serious contender, and her appointment would mark a bold and modern direction for the franchise.
