Key reasons revealed behind Edmonton Elks appointing Rick Campbell as coaching analyst
The Edmonton Elks’ decision to bring in Rick Campbell as a coaching analyst has sparked curiosity about the responsibilities tied to the role—and the veteran coach has now shed light on what he’ll be doing.
Speaking in a recent interview, Campbell explained that his job will centre around advanced scouting, preparing detailed reports on opponents, and assisting with game management strategies. Essentially, he will act as an additional resource for the coaching staff, offering insights and support based on his extensive experience.

He emphasised that head coach Mark Kilam remains firmly in control, with his own role focused on complementing the staff rather than directing it. Drawing on more than a decade as a head coach in the CFL, Campbell hopes to provide valuable input wherever needed.
Campbell joins the Elks after a stint as special teams coordinator with the Ottawa Redblacks, having previously led both Ottawa and the BC Lions as head coach. His résumé includes a Grey Cup victory and a Coach of the Year award, highlighting the level of experience he brings to the role.
The move came about after Elks general manager Ed Hervey reached out to gauge his interest. With prior connections to both Hervey and Kilam, the opportunity felt like a natural fit for Campbell, who is eager to contribute to the team’s success.
Unlike his previous sideline roles, Campbell will operate from the booth during games, giving him a broader perspective to analyse plays, particularly on special teams. He noted that the elevated view allows for better recognition of patterns and in-game developments, which can then be relayed to coaches on the field.
He will also play a role in helping the team adapt to new rule changes, including the introduction of a 35-second play clock. With limited time during training camp, Campbell believes quick adaptation could prove crucial in gaining an early-season advantage.
With over two decades of coaching experience—including previous spells in Edmonton—the role marks a new chapter for Campbell, who is ready to support the Elks in a different but influential capacity.
