40-year-old ice hockey player Alex Ovechkin addresses retirement rumours and sets record straight
Alex Ovechkin has hinted he wants to extend his career in the NHL, saying he would like to play for “two more years” as retirement speculation continues to swirl around the veteran forward.
The 40-year-old star made the comments while speaking to reporters, adding that if it were up to him, he would like to receive a new contract from Washington Capitals that keeps him in the league for another two seasons. A deal of that length would see him continue playing until the age of 42.

Despite suggestions that he may have already played what could be one of the final games of his remarkable career, Ovechkin has not confirmed any retirement plans. After contributing an assist in a 2-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, he left the door open to continuing, easing concerns among fans eager to see him stay on the ice.
The NHL’s all-time great remains one of the sport’s most iconic figures, and while uncertainty surrounds his future, his latest comments strongly suggest he is not yet ready to walk away from the game.
