Connor Ingram receives harsh and unfair backlash as NHL analyst questions Oilers’ defensive effort

The Edmonton Oilers are under increasing pressure following their Game 3 defeat, but NHL analyst Jim Matheson argues that blaming Connor Ingram overlooks the real problem.

Ingram made 32 saves on 38 shots in a 7-4 loss to the Anaheim Ducks, with the final goal scored into an empty net. Over three games, he has conceded 14 goals from 93 shots. While those figures may appear concerning, Matheson emphasized that Edmonton’s defensive structure has repeatedly left the goaltender vulnerable.

Matheson also pointed toward broader roster decisions, referencing Oilers GM Stan Bowman, who brought in Tristan Jarry and could play a role in any future goaltending changes. With Game 4 approaching, Edmonton must decide on adjustments both in net and across the lineup.

Head coach Kris Knoblauch acknowledged the quality of Anaheim’s team after the loss, praising their depth and competitiveness while stressing the need for a stronger response.

The Ducks capitalized on Edmonton’s defensive lapses throughout the game, with multiple quick strikes in the third period helping them pull away. Even with a goal and assist from Connor McDavid, the Oilers struggled to control play, repeatedly giving up high-danger chances.

Game 4 is now a key turning point, with Edmonton needing to fix defensive issues if they hope to regain control of the series.
