Tomorrow night, Mitch Marner will take the biggest stage of his career as his Vegas Golden Knights open the Stanley Cup Final against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1. After years of playoff disappointment with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Marner has reached hockey’s summit in his first season in Vegas, completing a long-awaited breakthrough.

What once felt like an uphill climb in Toronto has turned into immediate success with the Golden Knights, where Marner has found both form and freedom in a new environment. As Vegas prepares for the final, teammates and staff have openly backed the star winger and defended his reputation.

Jack Eichel spoke strongly in support of Marner during Stanley Cup Final media day, highlighting both their personal bond and his respect for the player.

“As a teammate and a friend of his, and somebody that cares about him and his family, of course I do,” Eichel said. “I think the world of Mitch. Anybody that has negative or bad things to say about him, obviously I disagree with, because I think highly of him.”

Eichel also noted the shared experiences between the two and how open conversations have helped their chemistry on and off the ice.

“Mitch has opened up to me about some of the things that he went through and I’ve opened up to him about some of the things I went through. I think it’s probably good for both of us to have done that,” he added. “He’s a big boy. He’s got some scar tissue to show for it. I don’t like people saying bad things about him because I care about the guy.”

Marner himself admitted that his time in Toronto came with significant mental strain, saying the constant scrutiny became “a real mental grind” that even affected him physically.

In Vegas, however, he says that pressure has eased, allowing him to rediscover confidence and consistency. General manager Kelly McCrimmon also credited the team’s depth and structure for helping Marner thrive, noting that the winger is “playing with tremendous confidence” and “savouring the moment.”

For Marner, though, the focus remains simple.

“I’m not a guy that lives in the past,” he said. “I’m in the present. I’m here in the moment. I’m extremely excited to get going.”
