Toronto Argonauts coach Mike Miller shuts out outside noise from critics
Despite widespread predictions placing the Toronto Argonauts at the bottom of the standings ahead of the 2026 season, rookie head coach Mike Miller insists outside opinions are not a concern for his team.
Toronto enters its season opener carrying low expectations after missing the playoffs with a disappointing 5-13 record in 2025, but Miller says the focus remains firmly inside the locker room.

“We’re not focused on anything outside the building,” Miller explained. “Our attention is on ourselves, how we want to play, and continuing to improve every day. Whatever is being said about us — positive or negative — isn’t something we’re paying attention to.”
The Argonauts underwent major changes following last season’s struggles. Former head coach Ryan Dinwiddie departed to take over as head coach and general manager of the Ottawa Redblacks, while several established starters moved on, including Dejon Brissett, DaVaris Daniels, Sage Doxtater, Anthony Lanier II, Wynton McManis, and Branden Dozier.
Toronto responded by strengthening key positions in free agency, bringing back defensive backs Adarius Pickett, Robert Priester, and DaShaun Amos — all part of the team’s dominant 16-2 campaign in 2023. Veteran lineman Dakoda Shepley was also added to reinforce an offensive line that struggled at times last season.
Rather than compare the current squad to the disappointing 2025 group, Miller stressed his focus is entirely on the present.
“I don’t really like comparisons,” he said. “Right now, it’s about 2026 and where we are as a team. I’m happy with our progress, but there’s always more work to do.”
Franchise quarterback Chad Kelly is also set for a major moment, preparing to make his first start since suffering a serious leg injury in the 2024 East Final. His return fittingly comes at Montreal’s Percival Molson Stadium — the same venue where the injury occurred.
Having worked closely with Kelly since joining Toronto as quarterbacks coach in 2022, Miller expressed confidence in the veteran signal-caller after a strong training camp.
“Chad’s focus has been excellent,” Miller said. “We’ve had a solid camp and preparation week. Once the lights come on, we know Chad Kelly is ready to perform.”
The Argonauts also appear to have found a fresh option in the running game, with rookie Sam Hicks emerging as a potential starter after an impressive preseason. Hicks rushed for 66 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries, helping pave the way for veteran Peyton Logan’s release.
Miller praised the rookie’s early progress but believes there is still room for growth.
“He’s shown some really good things, but there are also areas where he’ll continue learning and improving,” Miller said. “Like all of us, he’s a work in progress.”
