Samuel Emilus matched his CFL career-best with a three-touchdown performance in Saskatchewan’s Week 2 clash against the B.C. Lions, delivering another statement display in what has become a standout career.

The Canadian receiver found the end zone three times, marking the second hat-trick of his five-year CFL journey, with each score highlighting both sharp play design and his ability to exploit defensive mismatches.

His first touchdown came in the opening quarter with Saskatchewan deep in the red zone. The Roughriders lined up in a shifting formation that forced B.C.’s defence to reveal man coverage. Quarterback Trevor Harris quickly spotted the setup and took advantage, targeting Emilus in a one-on-one matchup against rookie defensive back Tyson Russell. Strong protection up front gave Harris the time he needed, and the play unfolded exactly as designed.

The second score arrived early in the second quarter from just three yards out. Once again, pre-snap movement gave Harris the clues he needed, as B.C.’s defensive adjustments pointed toward man coverage. Saskatchewan capitalised, creating the space required for Emilus to strike for a second time.

His third and decisive touchdown came late in the fourth quarter with the game on the line. Saskatchewan spread the field, and Harris recognised an aggressive cover-zero look from the Lions, leaving no safety support over the top. That opened a key pocket of space in the end zone.

Emilus battled through contact at the line before creating just enough separation for Harris to loft in the winning score. The play was made possible not only by Emilus’ route-running but also by a huge block from running back A.J. Ouellette, who neutralised incoming pressure and gave Harris the extra split-second he needed.

It was another reminder of Emilus’ importance to the Roughriders, with the 2025 Grey Cup Most Valuable Canadian once again proving he can deliver in the biggest moments.
