Manchester United came back from the dead at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, producing a remarkable turnaround to beat AS Roma 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League and secure their first victory in all competitions for 54 days.

Under immense pressure and with protests in the stands, manager Michael Carrick watched his side collapse early. Roma stunned the home crowd when Matias Soule opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a composed finish, before Donyell Malen doubled the visitors’ advantage from the penalty spot just seven minutes later. At 2-0 down, United looked out of ideas, and the unrest among supporters bordered on mutiny.

The defeat would have extended United’s winless run to nine games, their worst run in decades, leaving Carrick on the brink of dismissal with co-owners INEOS reportedly considering alternatives including Unai Emery and Antonio Conte.

But the second half brought a dramatic response. United were handed a lifeline in the 58th minute when Gianluca Mancini was penalised for minimal contact on Matheus Cunha. Bruno Fernandes saw his first penalty saved but scored at the second attempt after the referee ordered a retake, reducing the deficit to 2-1.

That goal changed the momentum completely. Roma began to retreat, and United pushed forward with renewed belief.

The hero of the night was Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha. Seven minutes from time, he pounced on a defensive mistake from Leonardo Balerdi to tap in the equaliser. Then, just three minutes later, he completed the turnaround, firing a powerful shot past goalkeeper Mile Svilar at his near post to make it 3-2.

Cunha’s celebration saw him leap into the crowd, earning him a yellow card. Moments later, his night ended in bizarre fashion when he received a second yellow card for a wild lunge in stoppage time and was sent off.

Despite being reduced to ten men, United held on for a crucial win. The result ends a nine-game winless streak and keeps their Champions League hopes alive, while giving under-fire boss Michael Carrick a much-needed lifeline ahead of a crucial home game against Aston Villa.
