Scott Wedgewood’s impressive start to the season earned him a one-year contract extension with the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.

Expected to serve as Colorado’s backup, Wedgewood stepped into the starting job after Mackenzie Blackwood went down with a lower-body injury. The 33-year-old has delivered standout numbers, posting a 10-1-2 record, a .913 save percentage, and a 2.26 goals-against average — with his 10 wins topping the NHL.

Wedgewood said talks about an extension began over the summer, but his early performance helped move things forward. “I tried to keep it in the back of my mind and just focus on playing for the team,” he said before Thursday’s game against Buffalo. “Now it’s signed, and I’m really excited about it.”
