A former first-round draft pick has hit NHL waivers and is now available for the Montreal Canadiens to claim
The Montreal Canadiens were unable to claim former Boston Bruins centre John Beecher off waivers, though it appears the effort may have been there.

The Calgary Flames, holding the top spot on the NHL’s waiver priority list thanks to having the fewest points in the standings, moved quickly to claim Beecher. This highlights the limited options available across the league. Despite Beecher’s modest underlying numbers and limited upside, he was immediately picked up—a sign that his status as a left-handed centre made him more appealing to NHL teams.
Montreal’s Waiver Opportunity
Meanwhile, Philip Tomasino, a 2019 first-round pick, has also surfaced in waiver discussions. While he doesn’t play centre and thus doesn’t address a key positional need for Montreal, the Canadiens may still consider him as a potential option to help navigate their current injury challenges.
