Elliotte Friedman sheds light on the real reason behind Quinn Hughes trade

The Vancouver Canucks sent shockwaves through the NHL this week by trading franchise defenseman Quinn Hughes in a blockbuster deal with the Minnesota Wild.

Hughes was moved in exchange for forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren, highly rated defense prospect Zeev Buium, and a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. While the return was substantial, the decision to part ways with one of the most talented players in team history has left many Canucks fans frustrated, particularly given Hughes’ prime years were still ahead of him.

However, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Vancouver’s hand was effectively forced. Speaking on Hockey Night in Canada, Friedman revealed that Hughes had informed the organization shortly before U.S. Thanksgiving that he had no plans to sign a contract extension this summer.

Despite acting quickly to explore trade options, the Canucks faced another major obstacle. Friedman explained that Hughes was unwilling to commit long-term not only to Vancouver, but to any team at this stage, which significantly reduced the number of suitors.

“There’s no question that several teams backed away once it became clear there would be no extension,” Friedman noted, suggesting uncertainty around Hughes’ future scared off potential buyers.

As a result, only a small group of teams remained seriously involved. Friedman identified the New Jersey Devils and the Minnesota Wild as the primary contenders, though contractual and salary-cap complications prevented New Jersey from completing a deal. That opened the door for Minnesota to step in and finalize the trade.

In Friedman’s view, given the circumstances and leverage available, the Canucks ultimately secured the strongest possible package for a player who had made it clear he was not prepared to commit long-term.
