Cameron Dukes breaks silence on death threats received as Toronto Argonauts starting quarterback
Cameron Dukes Opens Up About Abuse and Threats Faced as Argonauts Quarterback
Being the starting quarterback in the CFL comes with intense pressure — something Cameron Dukes experienced firsthand during his time with the Toronto Argonauts.

The former Argos signal-caller recently appeared on The Carter Code podcast, where he spoke candidly about the darker side of professional football. Dukes revealed that during the 2024 season, he and his family were targeted with serious online threats while he was leading the team.
Coming from a small-school background, Dukes admitted he had never previously dealt with media scrutiny or public backlash on that scale. The sudden exposure, combined with criticism and hostile messages on social media, was something he was completely unprepared for.
Despite that, the 27-year-old remained focused on his job. Dukes started nine games for Toronto in 2024 while regular starter Chad Kelly was suspended. He helped steady the team during a difficult stretch, finishing with a 4–5 record as a starter while completing nearly 72 percent of his passes for 1,444 yards, seven touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also contributed significantly on the ground, rushing for over 300 yards and four scores.
Once Kelly returned, Dukes was moved down the depth chart, eventually becoming the third-string quarterback as Nick Arbuckle led the Argonauts to a Grey Cup victory. Dukes said it was around that time — when performances dipped and expectations shifted — that fan sentiment turned sharply against him online.
He explained that the sudden change in perception was difficult to process, especially after everything he felt he had given to the organization. One poor outing, he said, was enough for some people to ignore the broader body of work he had put together.
Throughout his CFL journey, Dukes has been accustomed to being doubted. His collegiate success came at NAIA program Lindsey Wilson University, where he won a national championship and earned three All-American selections — achievements that were often dismissed because of the level he played at.
Even after proving himself in the Indoor Football League and earning opportunities in the CFL, Dukes said skepticism followed him. He recalled hearing comments that he was only a temporary roster option or that his style of play wouldn’t last at the professional level — criticism that sometimes even came from voices close to the team.
Rather than letting those doubts derail him, Dukes said he used them as motivation. He pointed to his first CFL start against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2023 as a defining moment, when he felt he finally showed what he was capable of on a bigger stage.
Dukes’ time with Toronto came to an end on June 1, when he was released during final roster cuts. A brief stint with the Montreal Alouettes followed in 2025, but he is currently a free agent seeking his next opportunity.
Despite the challenges, criticism, and hostility he encountered, Dukes says he remains thankful for his professional journey. Whether or not he plays another snap, he believes the experiences he’s had will be invaluable in the future — particularly if he moves into coaching.
For Dukes, the lessons learned under pressure have become part of a bigger picture: knowledge he hopes to pass on to others navigating the demanding world of professional football.
