Why Samuel Montembeault Could Face Challenges Adapting to the NHL, According to Pascal Leclaire
Samuel Montembeault got off to a shaky start with the Laval Rocket after being sent down to the American League to regain rhythm and work on conditioning. His last outing saw him concede four goals on 24 shots, resulting in a 4.07 goals-against average and an .833 save percentage. While the numbers appear concerning, many observers argue that the stats don’t tell the full story. Only one of the goals was truly Montembeault’s fault, with the others coming against a disorganized lineup hampered by absences and suspensions.

This first game in the AHL after a long time was primarily about getting back into game shape and adjusting to a different pace. As noted in previous reports, it’s normal for a goalie to need time to readjust when moving between the NHL and AHL, as the speed of play and defensive structures are very different. Goalies must recalibrate whether moving up or down, learning the new timing and dynamics in front of the net. Observers point out that “the speed of the game, shot power, and pace of execution are all elements Monty may need to adapt to during his time with Laval.”
In fact, the American League may feel unusually slow to Montembeault. He could anticipate plays too early, move faster than the game demands, or overcommit because the puck isn’t coming as quickly as in the NHL. Everything may initially feel like it’s in slow motion.
Despite the adjustment period, the expectation is that Montembeault will quickly settle in and regain confidence, preparing for a strong return to the NHL roster.
