Canadian sports commentator Darren Dreger delivers serious update on the head coach Craig Berube’s sack claim in Maple Leafs
Toronto Maple Leafs are enduring one of their most difficult campaigns in years, and growing frustration among supporters has intensified calls for significant change across the organisation.
Whether it’s alterations to the playing roster, a shake-up behind the bench, or even movement in the front office, pressure is mounting by the day.

The backlash has become so pronounced that speculation has emerged over the future of head coach Craig Berube, with some fans even suggesting a dismissal during the holiday period. However, those expecting swift action appear set to be disappointed.
NHL insider Darren Dreger addressed the situation on Monday morning, offering a more measured assessment of the club’s current stance. Speaking on TSN’s First Up, Dreger acknowledged the frustration surrounding the team but indicated there was no immediate sign of a coaching change.
Dreger noted that while dissatisfaction is widespread and discussions at the highest levels are inevitable, there was no sense that decisive action was imminent. Despite the noise, he suggested the organisation is not preparing to make a move at this time.
Although criticism is understandable given the Leafs’ position at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, Dreger also pointed to Berube’s past success in Toronto.
Under his leadership, the team reached its highest recent peak last season, pushing the Florida Panthers — eventual Stanley Cup champions — to a hard-fought seven-game series in the second round.
Dreger also revealed that Berube retains the support of key figures within the dressing room.
He shared that a source close to Auston Matthews confirmed the captain remains supportive of Berube and the coaching staff, emphasising that the struggles stem from collective underperformance rather than coaching issues alone.
For now, the Maple Leafs and general manager Brad Treliving appear committed to staying the course. That said, patience in the Toronto market is wearing thin, and the margin for error continues to shrink with every disappointing result.
