Controversy erupts as Tkachuk and Barkov lift Stanley Cup during live action

During the first intermission of tonight’s Winter Classic in Miami, fans were met with a moment few expected — and many immediately questioned.

Injured Florida Panthers forwards Matthew Tkachuk and Aleksander Barkov appeared on stage during Role Model’s intermission concert, hoisting the Stanley Cup and dancing in front of thousands of spectators inside the venue. The unexpected celebration quickly sparked debate across social media.

Supporters and critics alike questioned why two players currently sidelined with injuries were permitted to take part in an on-stage appearance mid-game, particularly on what appeared to be a slippery surface while wearing slip-on shoes. For some, the optics crossed a line.

Concerns weren’t limited to injury risk. Several fans felt the moment reflected poorly on professionalism, especially given the timing and circumstances.

“Call me old school, but that’s totally wrong to me. Your lease ended in October — gotta earn it back again if you wanna dance around with it,” one fan wrote.

While the moment was clearly designed as entertainment, it has divided opinion, raising questions about image, accountability, and whether there is still an unwritten code surrounding the Stanley Cup and when it should be celebrated.
