How the Mueller family contributed to 60% of Saskatchewan Roughriders’ championships
Marc Mueller is forecasting nothing but clear skies and smooth sailing for Saskatchewan — at least when it comes to the Roughriders.
After guiding the team to victory in the 112th Grey Cup, the Riders’ offensive coordinator is enjoying an offseason reminiscent of the stories he heard as a child from his grandfather, legendary QB Ron Lancaster.

“I used to hear him say that the winter of ’66-’67 didn’t matter how cold it was — it was the best winter ever,” Mueller recalled, walking off the confetti-strewn field at Princess Auto Stadium.
“It’s incredible to be part of the organization where my grandpa won a Grey Cup. My dad helped win another as assistant GM in ’89. It’s unreal, and I’m grateful that so many great people trusted me to be in this role.”
Saskatchewan has lifted the Grey Cup just five times in its 115-year history, and with the 25-17 win over Montreal in Winnipeg, a member of Mueller’s family has been involved in 60 percent of those championships.
“I’m just happy to win and be part of this group. If they let me stay forever, I’d love that,” said Mueller, who previously won two Grey Cups as an assistant coach with Calgary.
This victory, however, carries a special weight, linking him to his grandfather’s lasting legacy at the club — complete with a statue outside Mosaic Stadium.
Reflecting on the game, Mueller said, “When the ball got knocked down, we knew we were going to win. The CFL can be wild.
Montreal is a strong, well-coached team, so hats off to them. But it feels amazing. I’m proud of everyone — they work so hard and deserve this.”
At 36, Mueller has been calling plays for his 39-year-old quarterback Trevor Harris for two seasons. In the 112th Grey Cup, Harris set a record with an 85.2% completion rate, finishing 23-of-27 for 302 yards.
“For me personally, Trevor means everything. I’m so grateful to have coached him, worked with him, and called him a teammate and friend. He’s incredible,” Mueller added.
Harris echoed the sentiment post-game: “It took a little time to find our rhythm, but once we did, we knew it was only a matter of time. They’re a great defence, Noel Thorpe is an outstanding coordinator, but we got it done. Marc Mueller’s the man.”
