CFL bosses ready to push back on controversial rule proposal

When the CFL announced major rule changes in September, head coaches and general managers were not consulted. That is changing at this week’s offseason winter meetings in Calgary, where several leaders are prepared to present research and push back.

Montreal Alouettes GM Danny Maciocia said he has “done our research in detail” and will bring data to support his arguments, while Winnipeg head coach Mike O’Shea is keeping his opinions private but plans to listen and contribute where he can.

CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston introduced sweeping changes without consulting stakeholders. Beginning in 2026, the rouge will no longer award points for missed field goals, and the play clock will move to 35 seconds.

By 2027, the end zone will shrink to 15 yards, goal posts will move to the back of the end zone, and the field will reduce to 100 yards, eliminating the 55-yard line. The league claims these changes could produce 60 additional touchdowns per season, though some coaches, including Calgary’s Dave Dickenson, remain skeptical.

The winter meetings will focus on tactical rules to implement these structural changes, especially the impact of the new play clock in the final minutes.

While it’s unclear if the changes can be reversed, leaders like Maciocia and O’Shea intend to advocate for what they believe is best for the CFL.
