Police confirm details after fatal crash that killed three junior hockey players

On Monday, tragedy struck the Southern Alberta Mustangs junior hockey team when three players were killed in a motor vehicle collision south of Calgary, Alberta.

The U.S. Premier Hockey League Premier Division team confirmed the heartbreaking news on social media just hours after the crash. The players were all travelling in a single vehicle at the time of the accident.

The Claresholm RCMP, who responded to the two-vehicle collision involving a passenger car and a gravel-hauling semi-truck, confirmed that no criminal charges are expected. Cpl. Gina Slaney stated that preliminary investigations indicate the semi was travelling northbound on Highway 2 when the passenger car attempted to cross eastbound. “There is no traffic light at the intersection, and southbound drivers must cross two northbound lanes to access the town,” Slaney explained. She added that weather conditions were clear, and visibility was not an issue for either driver.

RCMP said the families of the victims and the other driver involved have been informed of the findings. Since the collision has been ruled an accident, no further updates are anticipated. The Alberta government noted that the intersection will be reviewed as part of standard practice following fatal crashes. The truck driver, from Stavely, suffered minor injuries.

The Mustangs later confirmed the identities of the players who died:

  • Caden Fine, centre, from Birmingham, Alabama

  • JJ Wright, left winger, from Kamloops, British Columbia

  • Cameron Casorso, goaltender, from Kamloops, British Columbia
