Gavin McKenna takes decisive legal step, enters plea in headline-making assault case
Reports surfaced Wednesday indicating that Gavin McKenna, a standout forward for Penn State’s men’s hockey team and a projected top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, has been charged in connection with an alleged incident that took place last Saturday in State College, Pennsylvania.
According to State College Police, McKenna is facing several charges. These include aggravated assault — described as attempting to cause serious bodily injury or acting with extreme indifference — along with simple assault, harassment, and disorderly conduct related to fighting.

If found guilty on the felony charge alone, he could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years. He has since been released on $20,000 bail.
Authorities say the incident happened outside a local venue and required police involvement. Various online reports and witness accounts claim McKenna stepped in after allegedly seeing his mother being verbally targeted by a 21-year-old man, widely identified in reports as Penn State student Josh Coakley. The individual was said to have directed offensive insults toward McKenna’s mother, after which McKenna allegedly struck him, resulting in a broken jaw.
On Friday, McKenna appeared in court for arraignment, where he was informed of the charges and entered a plea believed to be not guilty. A preliminary hearing is set for February 11 to determine whether the case will proceed to trial. His legal team is expected to argue self-defense, and a negotiated plea agreement remains a possibility.
Because aggravated assault is considered a serious offense, a conviction could have broader consequences, including potential travel restrictions — a major issue for someone with NHL aspirations.
Attention online has also shifted toward the alleged victim, with social media posts claiming he appeared in good spirits at a medical center after the incident. However, those reports have not been verified.
As the case moves forward, uncertainty surrounds McKenna’s playing future. The situation also highlights complex issues involving self-defense, provocation, accountability, and where the legal boundaries lie between personal protection and criminal conduct.
