Anaheim Ducks controversy puts Joel Quenneville back in the spotlight
One sign in the crowd said everything Tuesday night in Philadelphia. As Joel Quenneville and the Anaheim Ducks made their way off the ice, a fan held up a stark message: “Kyle Beach deserved better.” It was a moment that cut through the arena and was impossible to overlook.

Quenneville, along with former Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman and executive Al MacIsaac, was barred from holding NHL executive roles in 2021 following an independent investigation that found they had mishandled sexual assault allegations made by former player Kyle Beach against video coach Brad Aldrich in 2010. Beach later publicly identified himself as the victim. All three were reinstated by the NHL in 2024, and Quenneville was hired as Anaheim’s head coach last summer.
Although the league cleared Quenneville to return and he has said he spent his time away reflecting and learning, moments like the one in Philadelphia highlight an uncomfortable truth for the Ducks: his comeback remains deeply controversial. Not everyone believes he should be back behind an NHL bench.
That tension has been amplified by recent developments off the ice. Earlier this week, the Ducks and the NHL were named in a lawsuit filed by former employee Rose Harris, who alleges she was subjected to sexual harassment, bullying, and workplace discrimination between 2022 and 2025 while employed by OC Sports and Entertainment and later the league. According to ESPN’s Kristen Shilton, the claims include unwanted sexualized contact, derogatory comments, and a hostile work environment.
For Anaheim, the optics are difficult to ignore. On the ice, the rebuilding Ducks are struggling, losing to the Flyers that night and extending their skid to eight consecutive defeats, while allowing an average of five goals per game during that stretch. Off the ice, the organization once again finds itself facing serious and uncomfortable questions.
In that context, a single sign held aloft by a fan served as a powerful reminder that the past — and its unresolved impact — continues to follow both Quenneville and the Ducks.
