Preparations are already ramping up for the upcoming World Junior Championship, and Canada made a major announcement on Monday.

Team Canada has revealed the complete list of players invited to its World Junior training camp — a group that includes more names than will ultimately be eligible to compete in the tournament.

General manager Alan Millar explained that the staff will need to trim the roster by cutting one goaltender, one forward, and one defenceman before the final lineup is submitted.

Here are the players invited to camp:

Forwards

  • Michael Misa

  • Braeden Cootes

  • Gavin McKenna

  • Tij Iginla

  • Carter Bear

  • Jake O’Brien

  • Jett Luchanko

  • Cole Reschny

  • Porter Martone

  • Sam O’Reilly

  • Liam Greentree

  • Caleb Desnoyers

  • Cole Beaudoin

  • Brady Martin

  • Michael Hane

Defencemen

  • Kashawn Aitcheson

  • Jackson Smith

  • Harrison Brunicke

  • Carson Carels

  • Cameron Reid

  • Ethan Mackenzie

  • Ben Danford

  • Zayne Parekh

  • Keaton Verhoeff

Goaltenders

  • Jack Ivankovic

  • Carter George

  • Joshua Ravensbergen

While inviting an extra player at each position gives the staff flexibility, it also means three young athletes will face disappointment when final cuts are made. These are still teenagers, and missing out on the roster can be tough emotionally.

Even so, receiving a camp invite is a significant achievement in itself. Talented players such as Owen Protz, Marek Vanacker, and Sacha Boisvert didn’t receive an invitation, showing just how competitive the selection process truly is.
