Arsenal vs Man United: Calafiori Silences Old Trafford in Ruthless Smash-and-Grab
Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a narrow but significant 1–0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, thanks to an early goal from Riccardo Calafiori. The Italian defender scored in the 13th minute, heading in from a corner after United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir failed to deal with a cross into the box. The goal stemmed from a poor punch by Bayindir, who misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing Calafiori to capitalize and give Arsenal the lead. It was a harsh moment for the United keeper, whose error proved decisive in a tightly contested match.
Despite the early setback, Manchester United dominated much of the game. They enjoyed 62% possession and registered 22 shots compared to Arsenal’s nine. However, the hosts failed to convert pressure into goals. Arsenal, on the other hand, played a disciplined and pragmatic match. Their compact defensive shape and organization off the ball frustrated United, who found few clear openings. David Raya, starting in goal for Arsenal, made several important saves to preserve the lead, including sharp stops in the second half as United pushed for an equalizer.
The match once again highlighted Arsenal’s strength from set pieces. Since the beginning of the 2023–24 season, they have scored more goals from corners than any other team in the Premier League, and this win was a continuation of that trend. Manager Mikel Arteta praised the team’s character and execution, describing the result as “massive” given the venue and the opponent. He emphasized the importance of discipline and teamwork, noting that the team “suffered together” in moments of pressure.
For United, the defeat was frustrating but not without positives. Manager Ruben Amorim expressed disappointment at the result but remained encouraged by his side’s performance, especially their intensity and attacking intent. He argued that United “deserved a different result,” highlighting the energy of new signings like Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who were active throughout but unable to break through.
Ultimately, Arsenal’s efficiency and defensive resolve made the difference in a match where Manchester United held most of the ball and created more chances. It wasn’t the most convincing display from Arteta’s side, but it was the kind of result that can shape a season — especially in the context of a title race where margins are slim.
