Case takes unexpected turn: Major development emerges in Gavin McKenna assault case
Breaking news from Centre County: prosecutors have confirmed they are withdrawing the felony aggravated assault charge against Penn State hockey player Gavin McKenna.
According to a statement, the case will continue with misdemeanor simple assault and related summary charges tied to the injuries sustained in the incident.

The district attorney’s office also clarified that the alleged victim did not lose a tooth or suffer fractures on both sides of the jaw, contrary to earlier details included in a police affidavit.
After reviewing video evidence, officials determined McKenna did not demonstrate intent to cause serious bodily injury, nor did his actions meet the legal standard of extreme recklessness toward human life. On that basis, prosecutors concluded the aggravated assault count could not be supported.
McKenna still faces a misdemeanor simple assault charge along with summary allegations of harassment and disorderly conduct.
The case stems from an alleged altercation outside a State College venue last weekend.
McKenna — widely projected as a top pick in the 2026 NHL Draft — had initially faced multiple charges, with the felony count carrying the most severe potential penalty. While the withdrawal of that charge removes the most serious accusation, legal proceedings are still ongoing.
McKenna’s defense team has previously indicated that self-defense would be a key part of their position.
The case has drawn significant national attention due to McKenna’s status as a high-profile hockey prospect, and further developments are expected as the remaining legal matters move forward.
