Commissioner Stewart Johnston explains why CFL might have a tenth (10th) team by 2030
CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston says the league has no fixed expansion timeline but believes reaching 10 teams by 2030 is an achievable goal.
Speaking at the CFL’s winter meetings, Johnston said adding a tenth franchise remains a long-standing ambition, even as the league continues to face infrastructure challenges.

The CFL has remained at nine teams since the Ottawa Redblacks returned in 2014. While expansion to the Maritimes once appeared promising, progress stalled during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stadium availability continues to be the primary obstacle, with Johnston noting ongoing discussions with interested ownership groups across the country.
