Following Boston’s loss to Carolina, Bruins bench boss Marco Sturm spoke to reporters and gave an updated status report on Charlie McAvoy’s injury, easing some of the uncertainty surrounding the star defenseman
After a day off on Sunday, the Boston Bruins returned to the ice Monday morning at Warrior Ice Arena in preparation for their matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes at TD Garden.
The team also announced that forwards Viktor Arvidsson and Casey Mittlestadt would be placed on injured reserve. However, there was still no update regarding defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who suffered a deflected shot to the face during Saturday’s 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.

McAvoy’s injury was particularly tough for longtime teammate David Pastrnak, who admitted it was difficult to focus after seeing the incident. “For me personally, it was tough going back out there,” Pastrnak said. “But once the puck dropped, you focus on the play. You keep thinking about Chucky and hope he’s going to be alright. Obviously praying for him.”
Following Monday’s practice, head coach Marco Sturm spoke to the media, confirming McAvoy was meeting with doctors and that there was no timeline for his return. Surgery remains a potential option. “He’s with the doctors right now, so there’s no timeline,” Sturm said. “Obviously, he’s going to be out tonight, and we’ll see how he does today with all his appointments.”
That night, the Bruins fell 3-1 to the Hurricanes. Former Bruin Taylor Hall scored a late goal to seal the win, and Riley Tufte, recalled from the AHL’s Providence Bruins, broke the shutout with just 9.6 seconds remaining. Despite the loss, Sturm reiterated that there was still no update on McAvoy’s status.
