Harsh wake-up call for driver involved in Humboldt Broncos tragedy

The man responsible for the crash that shook the hockey world has received a significant update in his immigration case.

In 2018, a devastating tragedy unfolded in Saskatchewan when a semi-trailer truck ran a stop sign and collided with a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team.

The crash claimed 16 lives and injured 13 others, sending shockwaves across Canada and throughout the global hockey community. Families and communities were left to cope with unimaginable loss.

The driver of the truck, Jaskirat Singh Sidhu, was later identified and sentenced to eight years in prison. Following his conviction, he sought to avoid deportation from Canada after serving his sentence.

Years after the incident, a new development has emerged. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has rejected Sidhu’s bid to remain in the country. His lawyer, Michael Greene, confirmed the decision, noting that the Canada Border Services Agency is now required to move forward with removal proceedings as soon as possible.

Some families impacted by the tragedy have spoken publicly about the decision. Chris Joseph, whose son Jaxon Joseph was among those killed, said deportation would represent an important step for his family.

He described it as a major chapter in their healing process, saying it could offer a measure of peace and potentially be the beginning of a path toward forgiveness.
