Josh Bell promoted to Roughriders defensive coordinator, Corey Mace explains decision

Josh Bell has officially been named defensive coordinator for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, taking over a role previously held by head coach Corey Mace. Speaking from the CFL offseason winter meetings in Calgary, Mace praised Bell’s years of preparation and collaboration.

“Many teams would want Josh Bell as their defensive coordinator. We’ve been preparing him for this next step over the last few years, and it was just his time,” said Mace. “He’s contributed so much to our defence over the years. Our approach won’t change, but the flavour might be a little different, and I’m excited to see that.”

Mace and Bell have shared a decade-long partnership, winning Grey Cups together as players and coaches with Calgary (2014, 2018), Toronto (2022), and Saskatchewan (2025).

Bell’s influence was evident in the Roughriders’ strong defensive performance last season, including key plays that helped defeat Montreal in November. Saskatchewan ranked among the league leaders in multiple defensive categories, including rushing yards allowed, takeaways, and sacks.

“Josh has been exceptional throughout his coaching career. Our system is collaborative, and that won’t change. We’re fortunate to have him in the building,” added Mace. He also acknowledged the potential for assistants like Bell and offensive coordinator Marc Mueller to become head coaches in the future, noting their bright careers ahead.

With Bell now in charge of the defence, Mace plans to devote more attention to the offence and situational football.

“I’m excited to spend more time with the offensive coaches and players, and to explore different aspects of situational football I didn’t have time for before,” he said. “Our recipe remains the same, but I’m looking forward to new opportunities.”
