Major controversy erupts during USA vs Slovakia semifinal and spreads online

Social media lit up just moments after puck drop in the Olympic semifinal between the United States and Slovakia, but it wasn’t the on-ice action drawing attention.

The second semifinal at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 — with a place in the gold medal game against Canada at stake — quickly became a talking point for an unexpected reason: the uniforms.

Viewers immediately noticed that both teams were wearing heavy shades of royal blue, complete with matching blue helmets. Under arena lighting and through broadcast cameras, the similar colour schemes made it difficult to distinguish between the sides.

“That’s a lot of royal blue out there,” one fan posted, echoing widespread confusion online.

Even prominent voices joined in. Paul Bissonnette remarked that the teams appeared to be wearing the same jerseys, while Vegas Golden Knights insider Jesse Granger joked about putting red practice pinnies on one side during a TV timeout to make things clearer.

While the uniforms are technically different in design and detailing, the overlapping base tones have created a visually challenging experience for viewers early in the game.

With a berth in the Olympic gold medal game on the line, fans will be hoping the intensity of the hockey soon overshadows the colour clash that briefly stole the spotlight.
