The Hamilton Tiger-Cats may have locked in Bo Levi Mitchell as their starting quarterback for the next two seasons, but the team is also focused on retaining backup QB Taylor Powell.

Speaking on CHCH’s Sportsline Podcast, president of football operations Orlondo Steinauer confirmed the club’s intent to re-sign Powell before he reaches free agency. “Taylor is definitely somebody we want back,” Steinauer said. “He’ll explore his options, as he should, but we really value him and are high on his potential.”

Powell, who joined the Tiger-Cats in 2023, started nine games as a rookie while Mitchell was sidelined with injury.

That season, he completed 67.5% of his passes for 2,283 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions, adding 196 rushing yards and one touchdown. He led the team in all major passing categories and recorded the most wins among the QB group.

In 2024, Powell’s role was limited after a head injury in his first start, though he still impressed, completing 78.8% of passes for 422 yards and two touchdowns in limited action. His playing time further diminished in 2025, with just eight pass attempts, while Mitchell earned the East Division’s Most Outstanding Player nomination for the second straight year.

Steinauer praised Powell’s professionalism and preparation. “You want players who prepare like they’re going to start every week, even if they don’t. Taylor epitomizes that. He supports the starter while staying ready,” he said.

Despite limited game action, Powell remains highly regarded and is expected to attract interest around free agency on February 10. With only nine CFL starting QB positions, he may have opportunities with teams seeking depth or long-term starters. Steinauer acknowledged Powell could explore options but hinted the Tiger-Cats hope to keep him in Hamilton.

Currently, Mitchell is the only Hamilton QB under contract for 2026, with Harrison Frost and Jake Dolegala also entering free agency.

In 2025, the Tiger-Cats finished first in the East Division at 11-7 but fell to Montreal in the East Final. Mitchell led the CFL with 5,296 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Hamilton ranked third in net offence, first in turnover differential, and fourth in attendance with an average of 22,858 fans, up nearly 4% from the previous season.
